Ephesians 4:29-30 “29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption”
Cussing. Slander. Complaining. Swearing. Cursing. These are all verbal actions God perceives as sinful. God’s Word says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,” this means any word we know that is a poor reflection on our Savior and Lord Jesus is unwholesome. Unwholesome means dirty, unsavory, disreputable, think of the kindest and sweetest person you ever met and replace their mouth with that of a sailor and there is your
image of unwholesome. Using language to tear someone down, to invite criticism, negativity, and dishonorable content into a conversation. Although cussing and complaining may have separate or distinct words. All unwholesome language defiles the listener and never portrays the speaker in the positive light. Needless to say, Jesus spoke only when He needed to speak. Jesus never wasted words like we do. I know I speak because sometimes, I have something I want to say, or to answer someone’s questions, or if the Holy Spirit places something on my heart. Others say, I like the sound of my own voice and my opinion and I agree to.But Jesus talked only what God wanted Him to say and He did not withhold the Word of God when people’s needs needed to be met. Learn from Christ’s example, keep a tight rein on your tongue, it is not about self image but using the power of words for God’s glory and the expansion of His kingdom.
